The Abandoned Roller

Thursday, July 31, 2014

Just above The Knave is an abandoned object. I often sit on it on the way out to, or when returning from, Deborah's, Ram Grove or Thurba. It's situated on National Trust land. It's comfortable, dry and the view from there is good.

Three months (or so) ago I was sitting on it getting a drink out of my bag when I saw a quad bike driven by a middle-aged bloke race across the cliff top towards me. He swung round to the front of me, switched off his engine and told me that it was his roller. I told him that it was jolly comfortable and he replied that it had broken and that he'd had to abandon it some time ago.

For a few seconds I didn't quite know what he wanted. It was an odd way to start a conversation with a stranger. Anyhow, he seemed to want to chat more than anything else and we did so for a 10 minutes or so.

I saw him several times after that alway near the roller. I think he came down every evening to check his sheep, but he was always keen to talk.

I guess it's a lonely life being a farmer out there. I'm happy if I don't see a soul on my walks. Usually, I don't see anyone.

I saw him recently in the Greyhound Pub over on North Gower. I saw a face I recognised but couldn't place him. Only after we'd left the pub did I realise.

Anyway, I haven't seen him for a few weeks now.
